Strater Hotel
Durango, CO 81301
This historic hotel was built in the late 19th Century directly on the railroad and it is rumored to be haunted by many spirits. Witnesses walking through the alley that is adjacent to the hotel have noticed the ghostly figure of a man in a white shirt standing on the railroad tracks. He vanishes suddenly. The other spirit that is mostly seen is a railway engineer in period clothing walking through the lobby of the hotel. Employees of the hotel refuse to work alone on the upper floors due to reports of a threatening spirit and a transparent lady dressed in white.

In 2011, I arrived late on a rainy evening. It had been a long day for me with lengthy travel delays. I was exhausted. I was given a room on an upper floor. I entered the room and turned on the bare lightbulb ceiling light, I had the oddest sensation of a presence
in the room. It seemed annoyed that I was there, I’ve never encountered a spirit before. I just wanted to crawl into bed and go to sleep, So I announced out loud, “If you don’t bother me, I won’t bother you!”
I went sleep quickly and didn’t wake once. When I o did wake up, I noticed on top of the pillow next to me a small guest book. I swear it was not there when I got into bed or I would have noticed it, I started to read some of the guest entries, They complained of
the bathroom light getting switched on repeatedly through the night and the dresser drawers being opened and closed (they only heard the closing). I was very glad I had made my deal with the spirit the night before. My sense was that the spirit wanted to be acknowledged. Because I spoke to it, it did not disturb my sleep. I was SO happy to leave the Strater Hotel!
