This battlefield is said to be haunted by the ghosts of those who died here. The 1869 Battle of Summit Springs between Army colonel Eugene A. Carr and the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers took the life of Native American Chieg Tall Bull, among other deaths. It is believed that ghostly soldiers and Native Americans still lingers on the grounds today.

No US soldiers were KIA at the Summit Springs battle. Other than a number of Indians, Mrs. Susanna Alderdice was the only non-Indian casualty.
